Workshop Chamonix XV

Joint LHC Machine-Experiments Meeting on experiment protection from beam failures

12 June 2007

CERN, 864-1-C02

Attendance: restricted

The aim of the meeting is to finalize the strategy for the experiments protection from beam failures, discuss its implementation and commissioning. In particular, the meeting will address the following points:

  • gather all available information on studies regarding experiment protection from beam failures

  • define what further simulation studies are needed if any

  • create an overview of the current strategy(ies) for the experiment protection, verify the coherence among the different strategies and eventually modify them if necessary

  • discuss the the implementation and the commissioning of the protection system

  • introduce the person responsible, in each experiment, for the coordination of all activities regarding the protection of the detectors from beam failures (BISU, Beam Interlock SUpervisor)

Points to be addressed by the machine:

  • briefly review the general strategy for the machine/experiment protection

  • briefly review the Beam Interlock System (BIS)

  • present the LHC commissioning plans and the expected routine LHC cycle (from pilot injection to dump)

  • present in detail the beam failures scenarios emphasizing those that are riskier for the experiments and, if possible, give back-of-the-envelope estimations for other (non simulated) scenarios

Points to be addressed by each experiment:

  • qualify the most sensitive sub-detector damage levels (for example MIP/mm2 or MIP HZ/mm2) for the high voltage ON/OFF cases

  • define what beam losses can be considered safe for the experiment (in particular, the maximum beam intensity which can be lost in the experimental area in one turn with detectors OFF, i.e. beam lost because of injection errors)

  • study what information the experiment can provide to the machine if the injected beam is lost in or near the experimental area

  • review the beam failures scenarios considered and the simulation studies performed

  • report on the general strategy for the protection against beam losses

  • report on the implementation of this strategy and the use of the injection inhibit and BIS:

    • what detectors will participate in the protection against beam failures?

    • what are the interlock actions?

    • what are the parameters, the criteria and thresholds for taking actions?

    • what expected availability, reliability, efficiency?

    • how many inputs to the local BIC? maskable / non maskable ?

    • post-mortem analysis capability for beam dump. Post-mortem analysis only if the experiment has triggered a beam dump or for any triggered beam dump?

    • power back-up strategy: behavior in case of local/global power cuts?

    • commissioning

Points that need not and should not be covered:

  • beam induced backgrounds or beam quality

  • luminosity monitoring

  • software exchange

  • detector R&D
